2008 All American Hartman Alpaca Sale FEATURING THE ENTIRE LOS PRADOS ALPACA HERD of 200 FAMOUS BLOODLINE HUACAYA ALPACAS April 11-12, 2008 (See www.hartmansales.com) Why are you selling all your alpacas? That is the first question we get, and here is the answer. We have a small manufacturing business that formulates and produces “green” metalworking compounds. We manufacture machining and grinding coolants, rust inhibitors, and washing compounds. Our products are used in many countries to produce everything from automobiles to sewing machines to flag poles. As much as we love the alpacas, we have only so much time to devote to business, and clearly our preference has to be our manufacturing company. Growing and profiting in the alpaca business is very time consuming if you do the show circuit. We just have not had time to do that, but we have meticulously bred top bloodlines that are very healthy and show very well. The few times we went to shows, we always came home with ribbons. You will see as you study this material that we have stressed quality bloodlines and healthy animals. We are very proud of every animal you will see here, and we are confident that your purchase will enhance the value of your entire herd. Steve and Kasondra Marcus Some Los Prados History Steve & Kasondra Marcus were attracted to this business in 1995 by a small classified ad in Livestock Magazine, placed by Snowmass Alpacas. They soon visited Snowmass in Colorado and started their own herd with the purchase of six huacaya females, and two studs. One of those studs was the famous Cumulus, who was awarded first place in the AOBA International Show the previous year. The judge was Don Julio Baredda, owner of Peru’s Accoya farms. The next addition was to purchase three Peruvian imports, personally selected and imported by Anthony Stachowski. Later, we purchased Lowell Frederick’s (AOBA judge) personal herd and integrated them with our own. This included his famous herdsire, Crown Prince, son of SA Emperado. The herd has been carefully cultivated from top show bloodlines, and at least three generations separate any cross-breedings. To make this possible, we have used outside breedings to get some top bloodlines in our herd. Well-known names seen on our registrations include Royal Fawn, Matador, Augosto, Hemingway, Valerosa, Drambuie, Don Julio, White Out, Emperado, and others. The practice put into play by Los Prados has been to build a top show line of huacaya alpacas, but to minimize sales until enough alpacas are born each year to sustain a continued sales program of 20 to 40 sales each year. That goal has been accomplished and there are now over 75 producing females. An ongoing practice of Los Prados has been daily attention to each animal’s health. Ohio State University School of Veterinary Medicine is our only vet service. Until recently, Dr. David Anderson brought classes to our farm for monthly inspections. Our mortality rate is remarkably low for a large herd operation – well under 2% annually. IN 2007 WE DID NOT LOOSE A SINGLE ANIMAL FROM ANY CAUSE! One of our females had a beautiful cria when she was 17 years old! The missing element in the Los Prados business plan has been regular attendance at shows. Marcus’ are very busy in another business, and have only entered a few shows over the years. In every case, they have brought home ribbons. Now, due to the demands of their other business, Marcus’ have decided to turn their alpacas over to those few breeders who appreciate the value of strong, good bloodlines. Selecting Hartman sales to assist in this endeavor was a logical choice, given Fred Hartman’s many years of experience with exotic animal sales. THE MOST IMPORTANT HUACAYA AUCTION THIS YEAR!! Why?? Serious alpaca breeders know that the reason they purchase a particular animal is for the genes it will bring to their farm. The last alpaca we bought at auction was MFI Peru. Monte Carlo, son of famous PPPERUVIAN ROYAL FAWN 6014. Today, we can offer 34 alpacas carrying his genes. We have carefully blended many of the country’s top alpaca genes into our herd for many years. Almost every alpaca at this sale will have at least one Snowmass bloodline. Every breeding we do is based on genealogy, with the goal of balancing conformation and fiber, and proven bloodlines. About Herd Health: We are also very proud of the extremely good health of our herd. We work closely with Ohio State University and have an annual mortality rate between 1% and 2%. It takes years to blend the top lines into a quality herd when you keep three generations, or more, separating the related animals. We have done that with the result that you can save three to five years, and save many thousands of dollars in stud fees with big name herd sires, all as a result of careful purchasing at this one auction. You can download our genealogy spreadsheet, pick some famous bloodlines you want on your farm, and select one or more herd sires to get the job done. Also you can purchase proven females or maidens who already have these premium bloodlines and have superior cria on your farm in less than a year. Mix these animals with your own proven bloodlines and you will enhance your alpaca herd immensely. A very celebrated foursome of Snowmass Alpacas occurred when Don Julio, Drambuie, Hemingway, and Cumulus were all on that farm at the same time. Two of those three, Don Julio and Drambuie, were exported to Australia. Cumulus was purchased by Los Prados Alpacas, and has been our leading herd sire for almost 13 years. Today, we have 39 descendants of Cumulus, 5 of Hemingway, 20 of Don Julio, and 31 of Drambuie on our farm. All of those descendants, as well as Cumulus himself, will be offered at the Hartman Auction next April. As of our inventory on February 25, 2008, there are 229 occurrences of Snowmass alpacas in the spreadsheet, including Cumulus, Hemingway, Don Julio, and Drambuie. This April at the Hartman Auction you can bid on many alpacas offering famous genes. Here is an example of just some of the names you will recognize: In addition to those shown in the above table, in our genealogy spreadsheet, available by downloading or asking us to e-mail it to you, we have emphasized many famous alpacas by showing them in bold type. For example, names like Peruvian White Out G170, Sir Lancelot 0T01, MFI Peruvian Barringer, Rosario, PPPeruvian El Moustachio 6003, Zorro PC G188, Ameripaca’s Kensington, SA Emperado, Ameripaca’s Solomon, and many others are highlighted in bold throughout the spreadsheet. If you are selecting a new herd sire for your farm, this is the time to get serious about it. Most of the males available at the Hartman Auction in April offer more than one famous bloodline. Use the spreadsheet to make advance selections of those animals and bloodlines that most interest you. For example, Andoni offers Valeroso and Cumulus genes; Andreas offers Matador and Don Julio genes; Beelzebub offers Snowmass DeBeers and MFI Peruvian Barrringer genes. There are dozens of such animals with top bloodline combinations to choose from. The Los Prados females offer these same bloodlines. You can select from maidens, young mothers, and older females. Why buy an older female? For one thing, a Los Prados older female will be more closely related to some of the famous studs that are no longer available, such as the famous duo, Don Julio and Drambuie, exported to Australia by Snowmass over ten years ago. They were celebrated as perhaps the two finest alpacas in the United States at the time. You will see their genes represented in many of the alpacas being offered at the Hartman Auction. If you buy an older pregnant female and who mayhave one or two more cria, you can double the famous gene pool of your herd within just a generation, or two. *** The spreadsheet we have been referring to is available by clicking here.*** It is in a PDF file. (Most computers have Adobe Reader, which is required to open a PDF file.) You can use this spreadsheet to do some preliminary selecting before the auction. You can search for names in the PDF format. Look under “Edit” or “Search” and enter the name you want. That will open a box and you enter the name you want to find. Each time you hit “find next” it goes to the next occurrence. This way, you can travel around the spreadsheet and quickly locate any bloodline or animal. Also, you can print the entire spreadsheet for more detailed study, please be aware this file is approximately 66 pages. Let us know if you need any help with this procedure. This is the auction, and this is the time to make a major contribution of many famous bloodlines to your herd. Serious alpaca breeders as well as newcomers to the field will seldom have such an opportunity. Visit our farm in Columbus, Ohio anytime until the 5th of April and see your choices before the auction. You are always welcome, but please call 1.800.860.4491 for an appointment. |
